"I am not a great lady of song... I am not desperate from morning till night... I am not an intellectual... I am a woman who sings!" This is how Barbara described herself in the programs of her final shows. More than a "great lady", she was one of the souls of French song. A wandering youth. Since her earliest years, the desire to sing had always pursued Barbara. As a child, she imagined herself a "singing pianist" and drew piano keyboards on the table. From her wandering youth, Barbara retained a nostalgia that she later put into song in "Mon enfance". Of her difficult and violent relationship with her father, she spoke in an unfinished essay: "Il était un piano noir" and a song that became a cult classic: "Nantes". Her mother, of Ukrainian origin, she inherited a strong temperament.
