The story begins in Angers, or rather in Seville, where soldiers from the dragon barracks mingle with workers from the tobacco factory. Carmen, one of them, is arrested for starting a fight. It is Don José, a recently recruited brigadier, who is tasked with taking her to prison. The young man falls in love and deliberately lets Carmen escape. A beautiful start to a love story that ends badly... We know Carmen for her hits that seem to celebrate love. Yet, reminds Jeanne Desoubeaux, in this opera, love is neck and neck with death. In this story, which echoes the violence of our society, the public space appears as the only place where debate takes place and, moreover, all of Carmen takes place outdoors: in the square, in the street, at the tavern, or in the mountains.
