Exhibition: LOUISE MICHEL: FEMME RÉVOLTÉE
From September 8, 2026 to October 18, 2026, at Espace culturel La Monnaye, salle Eric Doligé, : Exhibition: LOUISE MICHEL: FEMME RÉVOLTÉE (histoire).
Activist, writer, teacher, Louise Michel (1830-1905) is undoubtedly the most famous committed woman of the 19th century. A Communard, she was sentenced and then deported to New Caledonia. Educated and prolific, she harbored a deep revolt against injustices, defending the weak against the strong in the name of anarchist ideas. A free woman who did not hesitate to stand by her opinions at the risk of paying with her life; a feminist fighting for gender equality, an early critic of patriarchy, devoted to the poor and concerned for all of humanity. Adored and hated in equal measure during her lifetime for her revolutionary commitments, she was known by many nicknames such as the “good Louise,” the “black virgin,” or the “red virgin.” The tireless activist Louise Michel died at the age of 75 while on a speaking tour.
